Hecuba is the daughter of King Dymas of Phrygia and the wife of King Priam of Troy during the Trojan War. Hecuba had 19 children and was said to be a beauty. Upon the fall of Troy, Queen Hecuba howled in pain and anguish at the loss of her beloved. She threw herself from a cliff overlooking the ocean to her death. Hecate, having felt sorry for her, turned her into a howling black dog and kept her as her familiar.
Another version of the story tells us that after the fall of Troy, Queen Hecuba was taken as a captive for Odysseus. In her rage and despair at the loss of her king, she murders Odysseus and is, in turn, stoned by his followers. Her body is then transformed into a black dog by the gods, where she becomes the companion of Hecate.
